Nissan LEAF Gets 99 MPG-e Rating from EPA: "nissan leaf epa sticker photo

These Numbers Don't Tell the Whole Story, Though...
Nissan has announced that it has got the final LEAF electric car ratings from the EPA. As you can see on the sticker above, the LEAF is rated at 106 MPG-equivalent in the city and 92 MPG-equivalent on the highway, for a combined rating of 99 MPG-equivalent (more below on what 'MPG-equivalent' actually means in this case). The electric driving range of the car as measured by the EPA is 73 miles, almost 30% lower than Nissan's own estimate of 100 miles. In real-world driving, the LEAF's range should vary quite a bit depending on ...Read the full story on TreeHugger

British economist and lead climate negotiator Lord Nicholas Stern (of the famous Stern report) issued something of a warning to the United States last week. He effectively argued that if the US fails to address climate change by enacting a pricing scheme to reign in carbon emissions, we could face an international trade boycott on American-made goods. ...Read the full story on TreeHugger

12 Common Blogging Mistakes to Avoid

12 Common Blogging Mistakes to Avoid: "
Well, maybe, not quite that easy.
Well, maybe, not quite that easy.
As tempting as it is to start a blog, there is a lot more to it than meets the novice's eye. All that smooth, easy-to-read, and interesting writing that you've come to admire from your favorite bloggers doesn't just appear randomly or without a certain amount of sweat and a great deal of revision!

Blogging can be great fun all the same and it's an ideal learning experience for you if you're a budding writer, a knowledge-nik who has a lot to share on a topic or hobby, or you're just keen to encourage people to see things your way! This article is focused on helping you to avoid the common mistakes many learner bloggers make; while you may still stumble into them, at least you'll be more aware and know how to correct your future approaches.

Steps

  1. With my update, it's original all right!
With my update, it's original all right!
Be original. More than anything else, what really matters about your blog is that it represents you and is genuinely unique. While you still need to attune your messaging to what people want to read, whatever you write must be infused with your unique take and style. Discard any notions that it's alright to harvest a bunch of news stories and drop them straight into your blog; nobody will want to read that when they've probably already read them somewhere else. Instead, take those news stories and add your angle to them – give people your opinion on the news story, providing your conclusions about the consequences or moral involved.
  2. Don't copy. Directly related to being original is the issue of not copying. Don't assume that no-one will recognize 'borrowed' material; they will without doubt. And think of it the other way around – would you want someone 'borrowing' your hard efforts? It's common courtesy (and the law), to tell your readers where you got your information from. Blog readers are both discerning and widely read; they'll spot a copied story a mile off and won't appreciate it. Although it can seem very tempting when you're starting out to use the words of others, resist doing so and persist with writing original content. Start small and get into a rhythm; over time, it'll get easier.
    • Being original with your content increases your reader's trust in you. Your readers will soon grow to know, appreciate, and expect your writing style.
    • Cite your material. Not only is this decent morally but it also takes care of potential copyright problems - if you want to copy, do so by using quotes or paraphrasing with the referencing made very clear. Another benefit of referencing is that it enables readers to visit your sources and learn more for themselves, something that many blog readers appreciate and expect.

  3. Don't forget to find out the legalities applicable to all works, not just text
Don't forget to find out the legalities applicable to all works, not just text
Understand the legal issues surrounding blogs. Even if you're not a lawyer or a journalist, it's vital to understand how you might accidentally walk into a legal minefield if you make certain errors. The basics of main importance to grasp include copyright, trademarks, defamation, and illegality.
    • Another potential minefield is trusting one research source without backing it up with another one - basically, adding hearsay upon hearsay. If you're not sure, keep researching to have several sources boosting your assertions.
    • Check out the Electronic Foundation Frontier for good layperson's legal information on blogging.[1]

  4. Do some research about blogging. If you're absolutely serious about becoming a good blogger, it's important to learn from bloggers who have already trodden this turf well and worked out what does, and does not work. If you're targeting people other than your very forgiving family and friends, knowing what other bloggers have done is vital. Read what the best bloggers have to say about their experiences of blogging and their advice to new bloggers. Some good bloggers to check out include:
    • Heather Allard, Darren Rowse, Chris Garrett, Corvida Raven, Tim Ferriss, Leo Babauta, Jessica Faye Carter, Dan Zarella, Seth Godin, Chris Brogan, Meryl K. Evans, Men With Pens, etc. There are plenty more great bloggers out there but this should be a good start for you![2]
    • News blogs are also good to learn from. News blogs such as The Huffington Post, etc., take news stories and provide their opinions on the story. You'll need to discern for yourself the political and other agendas behind each blog. Sometimes the best blog is one that aims to be neutral or seeks to reflect both sides of the spectrum - look around before deciding how you'll approach your own blogging.
    • Do a search for 'Top Blog Posts', or 'Top Blogs on Cars/Dogs/Babies/Skiing', 'Top women/men bloggers', etc. Whatever your interest, there will be someone blogging on it already. You can also search for fields such as 'Top mommy bloggers', 'Top daddy bloggers', 'Top celebrity bloggers', 'Top farming bloggers', etc., to see who readers are voting as the best in their genre.
    • Note that some bloggers are more willing to discuss their craft than others; keep an eye out for the bloggers who take the time to share blogging advice. Where possible, look for blogs that give advice without trying to sell you all the answers (it happens even with the best, so be prepared to cherry-pick and cobble together your advice tidbits!). Whether or not advice is offered, at least learn from reading the popular blogger's writing styles to work out what keeps them connecting with readers.

  5. Your writing style will depend on you, your content, and your readership
Your writing style will depend on you, your content, and your readership
Consider your writing style. If you're used to writing in a technical, academic, or formal way, blog writing might come as a bit of a shock. Blog writing style tends to be more conversational, peppered with a lot of your own opinion (however outrageous!), and above all, it needs to be interesting. The writing style best suited for you will come down to the content of your blog and its likely readership. Clearly, a blog that is more technical in nature can carry more technical writing but even then, your readers will want you to break down the latest techno-whizz gadget to terms that they can understand and digest quickly.
    • Be careful to avoid preaching at your readers. For many blogs, readers are looking for you to meet with them eye-to-eye, not to sermonize, scold, or seem superior to them. Treat them as equals. Expect to be humble, and to share foibles that each of us experiences in daily life. A sense of humor and humility are always important for a good blogger.
    • Political blogs can easily become bogged down in angry rants or intolerant tirades if you wear your heart on sleeve without involving your head. Seek to maintain a serious tone in such blogs without resorting to name-calling and deprecating comments.
    • Be very careful when cursing. If your blog fits cursing and the occasional 'eff' word makes great sense in the context, then fine, go ahead and use it. But a blog peppered with abusive commentary and little else than cursing will put readers off. Letting off steam is one thing, being a swear-o-holic is quite another. And cursing all of a sudden when you've never done so before will lose some of your readership.

  6. Select your blog's layout according to your content, style, and reader-friendliness
Select your blog's layout according to your content, style, and reader-friendliness
Think about your blog's layout carefully. Do a lot of research on this to find what works best. Use the lessons others have already learned; some key things to get you started include:
    • Genre: Generally it pays to stick to one genre per blog if you're an individual. For example, unless you have an amazing knack, readers are less enthused by a blog that combines political opinions, recipes, an examination of existential angst literature, your latest movie reviews, and how to sew clothes for kids all in the one blog. The exception is for instructional sites that put themselves out into the blogosphere with a cadre of writers writing across different fields. If you want to spread yourself more broadly, there are two avenues - either have a variety of blogs if you have the time to maintain them, or dedicate one blog to the 'self-introspective' stuff for a hobby and maintain another serious single genre or topic blog separately, with an eye to making it popular with readers.
    • Length of posts: There is no hard and fast rule because it depends on the content, the quality, the message, and the audience. Certainly, a lot has been written about brevity being important but so is getting the full picture where this is warranted. Keeping in mind that most online readers have fleeting attention spans, judge length by how your readers respond, the utility of your information, and the subject matter. Consider mixing up lengths of posts, to give readers a break in between the more lengthy and 'erudite' ones!
    • Layout: Headers are useful; subheadings help break up large topics and pictures and give the eyes a rest. Block quotes can work well, and leaving space allows the reader to feel relaxed, not rushed or overwhelmed. Try to use short paragraphs, no matter the length of the post. Use bolding to draw out important points and to capture the attention of the reader (bolding also interests the search engine but that's another matter).
    • Frequency: Too few posts and people will think you've wandered off; and so too will they. Too many and you'll wear readers out – remember that they have other things to read and do! Reader and writer burnout is a real issue when you over-post, so think through carefully what works best for you. Keep in mind the reality that search engines like a good frequency of regular posts.
    • Bad sign that a place of learning can't spell
Bad sign that a place of learning can't spell
Editing: Check your spelling and your grammar. Never underestimate the importance of this. Your expertise in the blog content won't shine if your spelling is questionable.
    • Revise, revise, revise: Cut it out if in doubt and say it with less. The polishing aspect can sometimes take longer than the original write-up but it's worth the effort to ensure that your readers remain captivated.

  7. Even a child's drawing can add interest
Even a child's drawing can add interest
Be creative. Even if you're a brilliant author, words alone won't make a blog. Most readers expect the blog to look impressive, and to be accompanied by at least one photo or image. Visuals add sparkle and capture people's attention. As with anything, don't overuse them – just seek to get the balance right.
    • Use your common sense when assessing how much is too much – if you're adding a photography, how-to, or recipe post, you'll be able to get away with more photos than say, a political or opinion piece blog post.

  8. Also think carefully about your blog's actual title; something catchy and clear
Also think carefully about your blog's actual title; something catchy and clear
Think about what you're going to title your blog posts. You could have the most relevant information on the topic, but if it has a boring title, it won't be read. Use headlines that draw in readers and that search engines latch onto. The search engine element is an art in and of itself which you'll eventually find yourself learning more about. For now, however, some key pointers to bear in mind include:
    • Use words that marketers use to capture attention. There are several 'Top 10 English Words' lists available online used by marketers to grab attention (do a search for one). Adding words like 'you' to the title may sound banal but according to marketing research, strategic use of the top 10 words can bring readers to open links to your post.
    • Ask questions in headings or create dangling information that has the reader wondering what the next piece of information will be. Make your heading tantalizing so that it prods the reader into wanting to read more - if your heading speaks to a need in a reader, then they'll love it. Top of the list is 'How to...'!
    • Keep the title simple. The simpler, the better, and try to keep the title less than 40 characters and the search engine will also love your blog!

  9. Encourage comments. People will read your words of wisdom but they won't tell you what they think because the majority of people (and that means around 99 percent) won't unless prompted. You'll get a significantly larger number of comments if you ask for them.
    • Don't close down your comments feature. It's important not to fear comments - they're a pulse on your blog, letting you know that people are responding to your blogging, whether negatively or positively. If your blog is really good, you'll get both sides of the responses, which is ideal!
    • Make it easy for your readers to comment. Readers don't want to jump through hoops. Balance making them sign in and using CAPTCHA fixes before they can say a single line with the fact that this will cause many of them to not bother at all. The fewer hurdles, the better, especially where personal information is concerned.
    • Always end your blog posts encouraging comments by asking questions, or asking for experiences and suggestions from the reader.
    • Without fail, respond to your commenters. Not only is that polite to the person who took the time to comment but it lets other readers know that you care and engage with them. They are looking! An obvious exception is spamming or flaming, in which case, either remove the comment (spam) as soon as possible, or let it stand on its own lack of merits (flaming) unless you have a witty and kind response.
    • Remove spam as soon as you can. It looks unprofessional. Invest in a way of keeping spam off - there are plenty of programs available. Find good ways to clean up spam that don't involve chasing off your genuine readers.

  10. Advertise your blog
    Advertise your blog
Spread the word about your blog and new posts. Use today's social media to the max. There are many platforms to choose from. Use one, or preferably, many of them. Twitter, Facebook, Digg, and Tumblr are just a few.
    • Take time to visit other blogger's blogs and leave comments with your name and link in them. Get known as someone who cares about what other bloggers are saying and creating, and they'll repay the favor.

  11. Ask others for their guest posts
Ask others for their guest posts
Encourage others to guest post on your blog. Guest posting is an excellent means for getting well-known, quality bloggers to increase the profile of your blog. Offer guest posts in return, so as to get your blog's link into other people's blogs.
    • Guest posts increase variety for your readers. And if you get well-known bloggers on your blog, this will help your readers to connect you with the guest poster, which will increase your profile.

  12. Love your readers and give back to them. Show your readers that you appreciate them. Give back to them by:
    • Responding to your reader's comments promptly.
    • Visiting your reader's blogs if they have them. Leave supportive comments and even suggest they guest blog for you now and then.
    • Facilitating your readers' interaction through quizzes, competitions, surveys, featuring your readers, etc.
    • Always provide a quality read that is of interest.

Top 10 Tips For Enjoying a Successful Career, Marriage and Family Life

Top 10 Tips For Enjoying a Successful Career, Marriage and Family Life: "1. Set Your Family and Business Goals—I believe the first step to achieving anything important is to begin by identifying your goals. If you have not already done so, pull out a pad of paper and write down your career, marriage and family goals.
2. Get The Support From Your Spouse—The only way you are going to achieve these goals is with the support of your spouse. Just as it would be unwise to think you can build a successful business without the support of your business partner, you won’t build a successful marriage, family life and career without the support of your spouse.
3. Create Blocks of Time For Work and Family—One of the first things my wife and I did when we got married was to put together a work and family schedule. What started out 25 years ago as a simple schedule where we blocked out time for my career and for us to be together has transitioned to a plan for our entire family. We delineate blocks of time to spend time with each of the children and together as a family. This one tip has made a HUGE difference in my life.
4. Review Schedule with Family—After you and your spouse have negotiated the blocks of time you will allocate for your career, spend together and be with your children, then review the schedule with your children and get their buy-in. After you have discussed the schedule, establish the boundaries highlighted in the next three tips.
5. Make Sure Your Work Time is Respected—During the blocks of time you have allocated to work, you are not to be interrupted unless there is important reason. Of course, there will be exceptions when either your spouse or kids need to talk to you about something, but you must make those times the exceptions and not the norm.
6. Don’t Conduct Business During Family Time—This means not doing ANYTHING work related during family time. I respect and value my family time and therefore I rarely schedule calls or appointments during this time. My phone seldom rings during family time because everyone knows when I am with my family, I don’t answer my phone or respond to messages. I’ve set boundaries and people I associate with on a regular basis respect those boundaries.
7. Make Your Family Time, Family Time For Everyone—No texts, no emails, no phone calls! This applies to you and your family members. Make your family time a sacred time that is valued by everyone.
8. Be Present—When you are with your family, try to stop thinking about everything going on in your life and focus on your family. Resist the temptation to talk about your work and instead concentrate on topics of interest to your family. Use your time together to ask questions and discuss what is going on in their lives.
9. Dates with Kids—If you have children, let me encourage you to block out times to spend time with them on an individual basis. There is no better way to connect with someone than one-to-one. Whether it’s a bike ride, a one night camping trip, playing dolls, a cup of tea or whatever it is they enjoy doing, block out time each week to spend with each of your children.
10. Weekly Date With Spouse—This is the number one marriage tip I give to newlyweds. Every week for the past 25 years with a rare exception, my wife and I have a date. Our dates may be dinner at our favorite restaurant, a boat ride or a campfire on the beach cooking hot dogs. The key for us is blocking out time where we can focus on each other without any distractions. This allows us to catch up on everything going on in our lives and to show our love to each other.
I want to challenge you to take steps to improve the balance between the time spent pursuing your career, building your marriage and pouring into your children’s lives. Print out this lesson and discuss it with your spouse. I am convinced if you will implement these 10 tips, you will live a happier, more successful and fulfilling life.

Fear Of Talking

Fear Of Talking: "Fear in any form can be terrifying and paralyzing, be it the fear of failure, fear of the unexpected or the fear of losing a loved one. Fear, in general, is unhealthy. However, if we are unable to control our fears, eventually they start taking complete control on us, thereby weakening us emotionally, mentally and physically as well. Hence, the best way to overcome our fear is by mastering it and preventing it from controlling us. The fear of talking, whether on the phone or in public, has become a common problem seen in most people nowadays. Not only does it stop the person from contacting loved ones, it also blocks work and business opportunities, causing anxiety and distress. The fear of talking results in delay in picking up important calls and delivering speeches in public. Does the problem sound similar to what you are facing? Looking for ways to overcome this problem? Scroll these lines to find tips on overcoming the fear of talking on the phone as well as in public.

Overcoming Fear Of Talking

Phone Calls

Make a note of all the conversation that you would be talking on the phone. Most people are scared about forgetting what they intend to say to the other person on the phone. The best way to deal with this is to write down all that you will speak. This would help ease all your worries.

Most people panic when they receive a rude phone call, as they do not know how to react to such calls. In such a case, ask your friend to behave like one of those people. He/she might enact the way your boss or the bill collector does. Practice your responses in order to better behave when the actual call rings.

If you are into a marketing job where you have to promote various products to strangers, it is natural to get anxious about the questions that the customers would pour in. Hence, gather all the possible knowledge about your product to speak confidently and answer the questions accordingly.

While making calls to an unknown person, some people fear that the person on the other end would respond negatively or start cross questioning. To overcome such a situation, prepare for the negative reaction in advance.

Always make a call when you feel comfortable rather than talking when the person feels better. Do not worry about the time that you would be calling, simply focus on your comfort level. For example, if you are a morning person, it is best to make calls in the morning rather than when you are dull.

Public Speaking

Always pick up a topic that you are comfortable with, such as sports, television, fashion or anything that interests you and puts you on the front. Gather all the possible extensive knowledge on that subject.

While speaking, always look at the audience and make eye contact. Though this is the basic rule of public speaking, it takes considerable time for a person to get adjusted. Many new speakers always look over the heads of the audience or at the floor or ceiling.

Never ever converse with the first friendly face that you find in a gathering. Try and make efforts to talk to everyone present. Eye contact plays a vital role here in keeping the audience glued to your talk.

Practice speaking by recording your speech in a small tape player and listening to it later on. Initially, you will be surprised to hear to your voice but with time, you will love to hear it.

While recording your voice, start looking into a mirror reflecting how you project yourself in front of the audience. This will give you an idea of what gestures and expressions you pose to your listeners and how you can work on them so as to improve.

How To Improve Your Social Skills

How To Improve Your Social Skills: "They say, a human being is a social animal, but the question is, does everyone possess social skills? Most of the people do not know the art of speaking. While some are just inept and incompetent, there are others who lack confidence and yet others who do not havep98 mannerism and etiquettes. Having sound social skills is extremely important in the present times, given to the fact that interaction and conversation forms the basis for everything we do. If you also face difficulty in interacting, remember, it is not the end of the world. You can improve your social skills by just putting in a little effort. However, you cannot be perfect overnight. It would take some time, but believe me; it would be worth the wait. Just focus on qualities listed below and who knows, from being ineffectual, you might just turn out to be the ‘apple’ of the social meets. In the following lines, we have provided tips on how to improve social skills, just for you.

Improving Social Skills

Be Yourself
Only when you are your own self do you feel comfortable. And it is when you are in utmost comfort that you indulge in free conversation and interaction. Do not change your inner self for anything in the world. Remember, humans have this innate quality of discovering whether a person is real or fake. In case you pretend to be someone you are not, trust me, you would be lonelier than ever before.

Be Responsible
One of the vital components of social interaction is to know that art of carrying yourself. It is very important for you to know what to do and how to behave in a social gathering. A person behaving in an undesirable and unacceptable manner is usually avoided by people. So, be responsible for your actions and act according to the situation.

Be Open & Approachable
Imagine talking to a person who is an absolute introvert or extrovert! Extremes of personality often turn off people. Ideally, you should have a fusion of both the characters. While being too shy and withdrawn is enough to repel people immediately, being too loud and outgoing would not do much good either. Just strike a delicate balance between both the personalities and you would be the ‘star’ of the social gathering.

Be Attentive
The art of listening is a stepping stone for conversation and interaction. Alas! Not many have it in them. If you would have attended a social gathering, you will know that everyone wants to talk, but no one is ready to listen. So, the trick is to be an attentive listener and people would definitely talk to you. Also, do not interrupt or chip in a piece of advice or suggestion just when the other person is in the middle of a subject.

Be Polite
Being humble and down-to-earth is an excellent way to break the ice. It sheds off all the apprehensions and nervousness and gives a good impression. It would speak miles about your manners, personality and confidence. Apart from being polite, it is also advisable to be diplomatic. While being honest and forthright definitely pays, sugar-coating the truth is very necessary at times.

Be Aware
It is very important to be aware and observant of people’s behavior. For instance, watch if the person you are talking to is comfortable with the specific topic. If he looks uncomfortable or is simply disinterested, just move on to the next topic. In case he/she is not interested in talking to you completely, the best bet would be to move out of the scene.

Be Cautious
It is advisable to keep your senses active. Do not shut your eyes, close your ears and numb your senses at the time of interacting. Keep a keen eye on who are your friends and who are your enemies. Do not confront everything to someone you have just met.

Akshaya Trust by Mr.Krishnan

If you had not heard of Narayanan Krishnan, it is a collective failure. This is one of the most incredible stories of personal commitment and Giving back to Community

Narayanan Krishnan, all of 29 years old now, does what he was professionally trained to do as a chef. Feed people. Only Krishnan does not do this in the swanky confines of a 5-star hotel. Every day, he wakes up at 4 am, cooks a simple hot meal and then, along with his team, loads it in a van and travels about 200 km feeding the homeless in Madurai , Tamil Nadu.

Krishnan feeds, often with his hands, almost 400 destitute people every day. And for those who need it, he provides a free haircut too.

According to CNN, eight years ago, this award-winning chef with a five-star hotel chain was all set to go to Switzerland for a high-profile posting. On a visit to a Madurai temple, he came across a homeless, old man eating his own human waste. That stark sight changed Krishnan's life.

Much to the dismay of his parents, CNN says, Krishnan abandoned his career plans and decided to spend his life and his professional training in looking after those who could not care for themselves. He has provided more than 1.2 million hot meals through his nonprofit organisation Akshaya Trust, and now hopes to extend this to shelter for the homeless too.

Krishnan is the only Indian in a list of 10 heroes that CNN has picked worldwide to honour. One of them will be chosen CNN Hero of the Year, selected by the public through an online poll. If many Indians get together to vote for this inspiring man, he can win by a long mile.

If Krishnan wins he will get $100,000 in addition to the $25,000 that he gets for being shortlisted for the Top 10. Akshaya Trust needs all the monetary support it can get to build on Krishnan's dream. Let's help him get there.

Vote for Krishnan here. (http://heroes.cnn.com/vote.aspx)The poll continues through November 18 at 6 a.m. ET.

10 Facts about UID ( Aadhar ) Project

Some facts about the UID project that Indian residents should be aware
of:

1. Aadhaar (the UID number) is not mandatory. People can choose not to

Water Conservation

This information was taken from http://www.commonfloor.com

The need and importance of conservation of water, energy and natural resource are known to people all over the world. An apartment complex residents can play vital role in saving water not only for their society but also for the city as a whole. Water conservation helps in bringing down the water bill saving money and environment. If we take out more water than the natural system will allow then this leads to a lowering of the water table and possible dramatic effects upon water quality, future water supplies and agriculture.

Adopting Green Lifestyle for Water Conservation in Apartment
Green lifestyle brings down the carbon footprints and save earth. Today Green is a buzz word associated with environment or earth. In an apartment complex demand for water is high and it increases during the summer. Water conservation is important and vital for better future. Water consumption in apartment complex can be reduced by using following steps or methods.

· Rainwater harvesting: Rooftop rainwater harvesting is quite popular since it is quite easy to collect rainwater falling on rooftops and terrace. Apartment owners can form an association or group for implementing rainwater harvesting system in the apartment.

· Group of water-conscious people: Encourage your family to keep looking for new ways to conserve water in and around your home. Form a group of water-conscious people and encourage your friends and neighbors to be part of this group. Promote water conservation need and methods in community newsletters and on bulletin boards.

· Repair or replace leaky faucets: Leaky faucets in your apartment are one of main contributor to the wastage of water. A faucet that drips once every second could be wasting over 2,500 gallons of water a year. Replace or repair leaky faucets as early as possible. Encourage your neighbors also for the same.

· Close taps when shaving or brushing: Do not leave the tap running while you are brushing your teeth or soaping your face. Turning the water off while you lather the soap can save as many as 5 gallons of water each time you wash. Use one glass of water for brushing teeth instead of running the faucet.

· Check your toilets for leaks: Put a little food coloring in your toilet tank. If, without flushing, the color begins to appear in the bowl within 30 minutes, you have a leak that should be repaired immediately. Don’t use the toilet to flush a cigarette butt, facial tissue or other small bit of trash. Every time you flush a cigarette butt or wastebasket, five to seven gallons of water is wasted.

· Dishwasher to conserve water: If you have a dishwasher, then stop washing your dishes by hand. If you have to wash your dishes by hand, fill one side of the sink with hot soapy water and fill the other side with rinse water. Don’t leave the faucet running.

· Use bottle inside flush tank: In order to reduce the usage of water during toilet flushes, put a 1-liter bottle filled with water inside each of the flush tanks. This displaces 1-litre volume of water in the tank and thus, saves 1 litre with every full flush.

· Dual piping: Residents can use one pipe for drinking, bathing and utensil cleaning where other pipe will bring in rain water and treated water for toilet, lawns, washing cars, floors etc. This will enable to save up to 40% of potable water.

· Stop dispose of food and Polluting water: Do not dispose food waste in kitchen sink as it requires lots of water for disposal and also increases unnecessary load on septic tank. Throwing chemicals in the trash or down the drain means they might end up coming back in your water supply and come back to haunt you. Daily ensure that you or your family consumes less water comparing to previous days.

· Washing dishes by hand: If you have a double-basin, fill one with soapy water and one with rinse water. If you have a single-basin sink, gather washed dishes in a dish rack and rinse them with a spray device or a pan full of hot water.

For cleaning toilet and flushing, use recycled water. It is unwise to use drinking water or potable water for flushing down water in toilet, washing cars, floors etc. Each day ensure that water used to comparatively lower than previous day. This helps to save water and your money. All the water used in the home, apart from flush water, can be re-used to some degree. Upgrade your toilet with new water efficient models.

Energy behind powerhouse lines

Article from Deccan Herald Newspaper Aug 21, Bangalore:

Hybrid boost
Energy behind powerhouse lines
Subhash Chandra N S, Aug 21, Bangalore:

This is a powerhouse, literally, and could even be the City’s envy. At a time when the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) is struggling to provide uninterrupted electricity to consumers, a six-bedroom house at Visvesvaraya Layout here is running on hybrid power, round-the-clock.
When 24-hour power supply to Bangaloreans, an election promise of the BJP, remains a distant dream for the City’s inhabitants, H K Gowdaiah, who is vice-president of the Visvesvaraya Layout Residents’ and Site Owners’ Association, has worked out an ingenuous alternative to end the unending power woes. His house doesn’t suffer power cuts, thanks to the hybrid power of wind and solar energy.

A solar panel dealer, Gowdaiah has been using alternative renewable energy to power his six-bedroom house for the past five years. The wind fans atop the terrace generate up to 1.5 kw of energy, while the solar photovoltaic cells adjoining the wind fan generate 600 watts. “The power generated is sufficient to electrify my entire house with six bedrooms, a hall, a living room, passages and even store rooms. We use this power for heating applications, running the refrigerator and other home appliances and is sufficient to sustain a 20-member joint family like ours,” said Gowdaiah.

Gowdaiah’s initiative took wings five years ago, when the new layout was formed. The area was plagued by electric overhead cable and transformer oil thefts which led to artificial power cuts. The Bangalore Development Authority appointed security personnel who could not prevent power pilferage since they were hardly seen in the vicinity. “We could not even lodge a complaint as the system was maintained by BDA and was not handed over to Bescom,” he said.

Installed at a cost of Rs 5.25 lakh, the power generated by this hybrid mechanism is stored in four lead acid batteries of 120 watt amperes to meet the peak load power. The wind fans, which run at a speed of eight kms per hour, can power the house for a period of nine months, while the solar power is sufficient for heating applications and works wonders during summer. Equipped with CFL and other energy saving techniques, this house not only saves power but also saves Rs 600 in the form of Bescom bills.

Convergence Did You Know 4.0

People make the difference…

Exact Narration by Suvendu Roy of Titan Industries, who shares his inspirational encounter with a rickshaw driver in Mumbai:

Last Sunday, my wife, kid, and I had to travel to Andheri from Bandra.
When I waved at a passing auto rickshaw, little did I expect that this
ride would be any different....

As we set off, my eyes fell on a few
magazines (kept in an aircraft style pouch) behind the driver's back rest.

I looked in front and there was a small TV. The driver had put on the
Doordarshan channel.

My wife and I looked at each other with disbelief and amusement. In
front of me was a small first-aid box with cotton, dettol and some medicines.
This was enough for me to realise that I was in a special vehicle.
Then
I looked round again, and discovered more - there was a radio, fire extinguisher, wall clock, calendar, and pictures and symbols of all faiths
- from Islam and Christianity to  Buddhism, Hinduism and Sikhism..
There
were also pictures of the heroes of 26/11- Kamte, Salaskar, Karkare and Unnikrishnan.
I realised that not only my vehicle, but also my
driver was special.

I started chatting with him and the initial sense of ridicule and
disbelief gradually diminished.
I gathered that he had been driving an
auto rickshaw for the past 8-9 years; he had lost his job when his employer's plastic company was shut down.
He had two school-going
children, and he drove from 8 in the morning till 10 at night.
No break
unless he was unwell.  "Sahab, ghar mein baith ke T.V dekh kar kya faida? Do paisa income karega toh future mein kaam aayega."

We realised that we had come across a man who represents Mumbai
the spirit of work, the spirit of travel and the spirit of excelling in life.
I asked him whether he does anything else as I figured that he did not
have too much spare time.
He said that he goes to an old age home for
women in Andheri once a week or whenever he has some extra income, where he donates tooth  brushes, toothpastes, soap,  hair oil, and other items of daily use.
He pointed out to a painted message below the meter that
read: "25 per cent discount on metered fare for the handicapped.
Free
rides for blind passengers up to Rs. 50.

My wife and I were struck with awe. The man was a HERO!

A hero who
deserves all our respect!!!

Our journey came to an end;

45 minutes of a
lesson in humility, selflessness, and of a hero-worshipping Mumbai, my temporary home.

We disembarked, and all I could do was
to pay him a tip
that would hardly cover a
free ride for a blind man.

I hope, one day, you too have a chance to meet Mr Sandeep Bachhe in his
auto rickshaw: MH-02-Z-8508.
